Unique Accessories For His Big Day
Wedding style isn’t just about a gorgeous gown—it’s about finding an aesthetic and look that communicates a couple’s unique personality and tastes. Don’t let the groom’s suit or tuxedo be overlooked as you’re shopping for accessories!
Of course, there are the basics to a groom’s wedding day attire: shoes, socks, cufflinks, and a tie. While those four items are seemingly nonnegotiables (unless you’re having a beach wedding where shoes and socks are optional), they only scratch the surface for options available to grooms. We’ve outlined five additional accessories that will help a groom shine on his big day. Not only will he feel great the day-of, but they are accessories that he will be able to wear or use time and time again. Consider giving one of these accessories as a pre-wedding gift or include them in your wedding attire budget.
Timeless Jewelry
Ladies aren’t the only ones who should have bling for the wedding. A watch is a perfect accessory to commemorate such a special day, and the right style will really elevate his look. Plus, other accessories can be matched to the watch. For example, if the watch is a particular metal, his cufflinks can be in a similar finish. Or, if the watch is either black or brown leather, they could match the shoes and belt he has planned for the day.
Bonus: Engrave a special quote or your wedding date on the back!
Matching Pocket Square
Don’t forget about a pocket square as you’re planning the final look for a suit. The pocket square can either match the bridal party’s colors, the groom’s tie, or feature a fun print for an unexpected pop of personality.
A coordinating handkerchief can be substituted for a pocket square if you’re getting married on a particularly hot day or there’s a chance the groom may get choked up during the ceremony.
Not sure how to fold a pocket square? When in doubt, opt for the classic square. Simply lay the pocket square out flat, fold the square in half once lengthwise, and then form a square by folding up the bottom. Fold the square one more time lengthwise to match the size of your pocket and then place the pocket square in the jacket pocket with the edges facing up.
Tie Bars and Collar Stays
Even the smallest accessories count on your wedding day. As you’re planning the metal or finish on the groom’s cufflinks, consider matching or coordinating collar stays and tie bar to complete the look.
Collar stays in particular will help keep a clean, crisp look as the added weight that they provide will help keep the collar flat and where it should be. While most collar stays aren’t visible—they are inserted into the seam of the collar—they’re an accessory that can keep the groom looking sharp even well into the reception.
Lapel Pin
Consider fastening the groom’s boutonniere with a lapel pin rather than a run-of-the-mill pin from your sewing basket. The lapel pin can feature the groom’s initials or monogram, or feature something particularly memorable or special to the groom like his college insignia.
Rule of thumb: A lapel pin should be placed on the upper left of a lapel and should run parallel to the lapel rather than straight up and down.
Indulgent Cologne
Out of the five senses, our sense of smell is most commonly linked with memory. After a while, however, we become “nose blind” to our everyday scents and their memory-inducing qualities lose their effects.
Rather than a spritz or two of the groom’s everyday cologne, consider investing in a more indulgent brand that can be reserved for the wedding day and special occasions to come.
