More couples are seeking out alternatives to the diamond to save money on the engagement ring. According to Elise Rose, of Grace Marie Jewelry and Design in Forest, the two options below provide the same look, for less:
Lab-Grown Diamonds—These are genetically identical to earth-mined diamonds. They require a special tester to tell the difference. “It is a great alternative, as it wears exactly the same as an earth-mined diamond, but it is considerably less expensive. So brides can get that big look, with the same durability, without the cost.
Moissanite—This is also lab grown because genuine moissanite is very rare and is more expensive than an earth-mined diamond. “Moissanite is a 9.25 on the Mohs scale (diamonds are a 10) and to an untrained eye looks like a diamond. This is also a great way to have a big look, without the cost of an earth-mined diamond.”
Rose also has noticed these recent ring trends:
Salt and Pepper Diamonds—These are earth-mined diamonds that have a ton of characteristics in them. “Brides love these for the uniqueness of them. Sometimes they are called galaxy diamonds because it can be like looking into the night sky.”
Oval Settings—Round settings are trending down, Elise says.
Yellow Gold—This metal preference has been popular for years now and is still the top pick. White and rose gold are less popular.
